Is anyone satisfied with Mt. Greenwood school?
Submitted by mtgreenwoodmom on Thu, 01/03/2008 - 11:27pm.
Are there any parents who truly feel the way Mt. Greenwood school operates is beneficial to our childrens future? Individually the teaching and auxillary staff I have dealt with have been great. However there is an air of inconsideration which seems to come from the administration. The TEAM approach poster that hangs in the hallway when you enter emphasizes a relationship of the staff and parents working together but I have seen little evidence of that encouraged. The PTO league holds meetings only during the day offering no other times and then charges $5 for a calendar regarding school events; the local school council holds 2 meetings but the information discussed is not posted anywhere; parents who put in applications to volunteer hear nothing back from the principal; teachers are intimidated by administrative prescence when communicating with parents; and why are we the only school in the area with dismissal time staggered between 1:15pm and 1:45pm? I just don't understand how a school can declare the boundary of being libel for a student until they walk in the front door of their home without allowing us as parents to watch what is happening in theirs. Has anyone had success in this area?
The teacher to student ratios are typical. The relationship depends on the teacher and student interaction- there are a few classrooms for each grade. Most everyone uses the school for preschool and knidergarten. After that if they can afford it they go to any of the private schools- St. Christina's, Queen of Matyrs, or St. Cajetian. Another option is to also apply for the school lottery for other CPS schools in and around the area like-Clissold, Cassell, Kellog, Keller Regional Gifted and Talented and Lenart. This process opens in October and closes the week before Christmas. Give the school a try- maybe if more parents become involved and concerned some of the topics I raised will become addressed. Investigate and visit the schools though to see which feels like the best fit for your children. Their comfort level in the learning enviornment is what matters most.
I have a couple of kids at Mt Greenwood and find the school outstanding. I have also been to quite a few LSC meetings and fing the board quite open and receptive. The PTO is wonderful and if you can not attend the meetings you can email and ask questions. The scores are outstanding. Approx 1/3 of the school is Special Needs and is a model LRE School for the State. Beverly does not cater ( they find a legal loop hole to dump them at Mt Greenwood) to Special Needs and sends their students to Mt Greenwood for services and teaching. This way the Beverly schools do not have their scores effected. They still score higher than State standards. If you can get over the snob mentality from the neighborhood about public schools your kids will do well at Mt Greenwood. A great education with your tax dollars at work.
It sounds like you're pretty happy with the school, and can get the answers you need from the PTO.
I guess I didn't know that the school was Special Needs. Does that take away from the rest in terms of resources, or does it add to the whole? And what does the term Special Needs mean exactly?
Where can I get a record of the schools test scores? Are they online somewhere, like at a government site or something?
Have you ever considered private schools?
Sounds like folks from Beverly send more of their kids to the private schools then, too? I suppose with legal loopholes they have a bunch of high-priced lawyers rigging the system?
Mount Greenwood School has special education for children who have handicaps.Children who have downs syndrome and some who have physical handicaps. I was not aware that 1/3 of the population was special needs. You can find out more information by checking out the CPS website, I am not sure of the web address, I am sure you can find it by doing a search. Most of the teachers that I have come in contact with have been very nice. The uppergrades teachers are great. They truly show interest and care about the kids and their futures in high school. Private schools can be very expensive; but's it's up to what you can afford. Hope this info helps you.
I am happy. The scores are on the cps website. IF you separate the test Special Needs scores, the school outperformed Keller. But State and Federal test guidelines require a child with special needs to test at their age grade level not taking into account where they are at due to autism or any others. All Special needs vary and it is sad that the State ans Federal testing standards don't take this into consideration. But the school's Special needs program is oustanding and is a model LRE program. The staff is great! So all students scores are put together to get the scores. I did have a 3rd grader a few years ago and the State lost the 3rd grade tests. Many others from across the state as well. So that year Annual Yearly Progress was not made due to no scores for third grade. Several school districts sued. CPS was looking into it as it does effect funding as well. The teachers at Mt Greenwood have high expectations. It may seem a bit tough at first adjusting but mark my words, your child will get a great education. I have checked into private schools. The math and science curriculum isn't as good as MTG. I have talked to several parents at these schools ( I only checked 2 of them) and if your child doesn't fall into the right clique, you may have a hard time there. My children's education is more important to me than a status of where you went to shcool. That is just my thought, I know it may not be shared by others. Sorry if it offends anyone. While it is a compliment that Beverly wants to send their kids here, why not set up in their own schools with a Special Needs Program like ours. The PTO is always looking for volunteers. Carrie Cotillo does an outstanding job. The $5 for the calendar is the PTO Dues. Well worth it. Please take time and check the school out. I think you will like what you see.
I heard only good things about this school. My kids are not going there but I heard actually a lot about it. Of course this article is quite old so I guess the information is old too. Thanks for posting it here however and good luck in your future work!
Regards, Harold from free cna classes
The special needs kids program sounds like a real plus for a school. Exposing your kids to an environment of acceptance and tolerance and a wider world view seems to outweigh the negatives--or perceived negatives--of lower test scores and scarce resources.
But, more on this later--I have to get back to work!
If anyone's looking for a link to the CPS site for test scores, here you go.
I am a fairly new resident to Mt. Greenwood and one of the main reasons on choosing this neighborhood is because of Mt. Greenwood Elementary School. I am a teacher and I know how important a good school is in our children's future. I researched various schools and the neighborhoods and found Mt. Greenwood to be outstanding. I am a practicing Catholic who went to Catholic school in the suburbs. I have also taught in the Catholic schools and in the public schools. Both settings offer an excellent education, strengths and weaknesses in each. I only want the best for my children and I plan on sending them to Mt. Greenwood Elementary School. You will find that no matter where you go or where you live there are political games to be played.
The fact that Mt. Greenwood school has a strong special needs program and that they are taking on additional students from other schools is just one more positive thing to say about them. So many schools either don't have the resources to care for these children or don't want to because of the extra burden special needs programs can create. This can include extra paper work, lower test scores and more stress for teachers and administration. I agree very strongly with one of the previous readers that as a community we need to stand by our school, support them and be as active as we can. This is how schools gain their strength and our children learn through our example that school and education are important and deserve our respect.
This may be slightly off-topic, and I'm sure some of you saw this article in the Sun-Times in the wake of Monday's visit to Chicago by President Bush, but it's interesting nonetheless: The story mentions three Chicago teens who have been "left behind," with one of them a former Morgan Park High School student.
There there was this response.
There's been a lot of talk on this site about the benefits and drawbacks of a public education versus a private education, and even at the high school level - maybe even more so - the debate rages on. Any thoughts?
I have a child in public H.S. and it all in what the student puts into his or her education. My child is doing wonderfully. Challenged and doing well grade wise. I have seen kids in private schools get passed up to 6th grade and have undiagnosed dislexia ( my spelling off, no coffee yet)They kept passing her becuase of the family name. There is no question that NCLB is a failure and has been since LBJ ( they just kept changing its name each President) Educators are not consulted at all on this program. It ultimately comes down to teachers and parents. Principals oversee the teachers and check teachers and students much more now. There is a system for it. Also it is important to get good quality teachers. Bring back some of the retireees as well. It is funny that in our area most kids do not fall between the cracks. But if you get into the inner city schools it seems more frequent. The inner city schools fight an upward battle with many of the students needing specialized services, speech, counceling etc. Their environment at home and on the way to school is challenging in some cases. Teaching isn't just teachig there, you have to be a social worker as well which cuts into basic teaching. Lack of parental involvement is another problem as well. So I ask your opinion....Why is it working here and not other schools?
We pulled our kids out of St Catherines to send them to Mt Greenwood...I am very impressed with the education that my kids are recieving. We only intended to send one of our kids there for kindergarten, and ended up pulling the others from Catholic school.
In reading your concerns above I wanted to respond to let you know that I have a son in Mt. Greenwood School, it is his first year, he is in the upper grades. Our experience has been very frustrating and stressful for my family. There was no orientation to acclamate my son to the rules and procedures of the school. I cannot say that ALL the teachers are sub-standard, but 2 of my son's teachers in core subjects should re-evaluate their career choice (1 of the teachers is actually a student teacher, the regular teacher become ill and unable to come back to the school). The Principal seemed to be eager to resolve my son's struggles, but the Vice Principal is not willing to listen to parents concerns or concede to the notion that a few of the teachers are not "TEACHING". I am pretty much home schooling my son after my full-time job, it is very exausting. Assignments are not explained, not graded properly or timely and the school in an effort to "Go Green" and save money is not passing out instructions on assignments to the students. The school asks you for an email address to give info, so my son cannot start some of the assignments until I get home from work and print it out for him. I would love to see these few bad apple teachers take a good look at their career choice and realize that they are doing a great dis-service to the young people, that look up to them for knowledge and guidance.
I have two in the upper grades and the only assignment that was to be printed from the school website was the Father's Day Essay. When my printer went out, I sent my kids to the library to print it out. The rest of the emails I get are just reminders and information on what is upcoming. The rules at this school, I find are nothing short of what you would expect of your child at home ie don't do your assigned homework..... expect consequences. Teacher's are also easily available for questions. There is an expectation of parents to be involved with their child's education. Know what is going on, due and when. Know what they are having trouble in and help. If you are unable to help, ask the teacher. Re enforce what they learned that day. Both my husband and I work and this has never hindered our involvement with our kids and their education. The new Parent Portal gives you access to your child's grades and asssignments (incase your child forgets to write them down in his/her agenda daily as required) 24 -7. I have 2 in High School and Mt Greenwood School prepared them well. The new teachers filing in are doing a good job.
We have had no problems with Mt Greenwood School, and have enjoyed it up until this year. I have a child in the upper grades, and I am ready to send him back to Catholic school. The principal is unhelpful and seems to enjoy making children feel ashamed and unworthy, and the vice principal is no better.
My child in the upper grades has been a really good student, and always well liked by teachers, but gets in trouble for really assinine things (only from one teacher, but it is enough to lose priviledges over) The teacher that I am speaking of gives tickets out like candy, and I am not the only parent to have a problem with this.
This school has been nothing but frustrating since entering Junior High, and I would not recommend it to anyone anymore.
We have three kids at Mt. Greenwood and we could not be happier. The school has it all; a great curriculum, fantastic teachers and active administration. Our kids are so happy there because they are challenged and learning in a safe place. I think the administration is doing a great job. I love the constant flow of info from the principal. You can't say you don't know what is going on there because we are constantly updated via email. My kids actually enjoy going to school every day compared to their last school. I think it is great that rules are expected to be followed and consequences are given. That is what school is about. I have found the teachers, principal and vice principal to be fair and consistent. But then again, we have high expectations for our kids so maybe that's why we have not had any problems. The school also has a great PTO that is very active in the school. As with anything, you reap what you sew. We are involved with our kids education and Mt. Greenwood foots the bill!!
I have two in the upper grades and they have done well. Sometimes when our kids get into the upper grades, they get a little bold and depend on being liked by teachers to get away with things. You should be happy that someone is teaching your child to respect others and to follow rules. If you teach them that it is OK to break the rules, what kind of grown up will they become? Every year there seems to be one or two parents who complain their child is being picked on. Of course you want to believe your child would never do anything wrong, but let's get real here. Instead of complaining about the teachers, how about looking into your house first.
I have a friend who took her daughter out of a catholic school in 6 grade and she has had nothing but problems since entering the public school. I do believe the catholic school was not challenging and when she really had to work after entering public school she didn't know what to do. I am tired of the blame being put on the public school for her child's failure. I feel sorry for her daughter, she was not prepared and instead of getting her help they just blame the school. The same child who is failing, is out walking around the neighborhood on school nights and sometimes very late. You can never blame all of your problems on the school. Good study habits begin at home and when they are little. A lot of parents are lazy and prefer the easy way out and like to blame all of their problems on the school. There are alot of bad teachers out there who have job security but there are also alot of negligent parents. Catholic school parent's think they are superior to the public school kids. I am so tired of the Chicago Public Schools getting all the blame. Parent's, ultimately it is your responsibility.
It is very obvious that this site is watched by members of the LSC and staff at Mt Greenwood school(I have not spoken, face to face with one single parent that is happy with this school). After having issues with Mt Greenwood School, I started talking to other parents that have children at Mt Greenwood school and there are numerous parents that are ashamed at the way the principal, assistant principal and A FEW (not all) teachers have been treating our children. We should not stop sending our children to Mt. Greenwood School, it is our community, it is our school. Just continue to teach each one of your children to deal with adults that are bullies, because in real life they will have to deal with co-workers of this nature. See we should be thanking them for treating our children like this, it will help them in the future!
The problem with many public school teachers is that they are products of the public school system. Chicago has one of the worst public school systems in the nation. Mt. Greenwood is not perfect, I have hears about many problems that are not addressed and parents voices that are ignored. I have heard of the way some children are treated there by teachers and other kids and no action is taken to stop this treatment. The LSC can patrol here as much as they want to try and paint a nice picture, but those of us with kids here know the truth and are not afraid to let others know.
So the object of posting here was to put down and slander a teacher, spread rumors and complain about the LSC ( to which there has been 10 meetings this year and I have never seen or heard you there). Can't go to meetings, write a letter and sign your name so we know how to contact and guide you. You are obviously frustrated with a teacher. But instead of going through avenues of solutions you chose not to help your own child but instead bash the entire school and staff. Do you want a solution or do you just want to continue to make slanderous remarks? Grow up, act like an adult and help your child. Show your child the right way to go about getting resolutions.
And you know I haven't been to a meeting how?? And you are aware that letters have not been written how?? Know what you are talking about before you open your mouth.
No letter was ever addressed to me or any of the LSC members to date. I have not missed one single meeting this year and no one has said anything like what you claim here at any of those meetings. Look at the meeting minutes and those who have attended. There's a sign in sheet. There has been only one person who had an issue not brought up here, and to protect her privacy, I will not mention it on this blog. This issue was resolved between her, her child and teacher with out slanderous remarks and to everyones satisfaction. I offered to help you and you chose to soil my reputation with slanderous remarks and false accusations. Again, if this continues, I have secured a lawyer.
Mt. Greenwood Elementary school is a CPS institution, in other words its a PUBLIC school, and the "LSC" stands for Local School Council. Mrs. Lucid, if you choose to be a member of the LSC you open yourself up to examination of the citizens the school represents. I understand you're frustrated with seeing negative remarks towards your work but you truly can't believe some of these comments aren't accurate.
Also, this blog is a public forum that allows individuals to participate in electronic conversation about any number of subjects related to the school. There is nothing that says issues need to be filtered through the LSC. A parent or citizen in the community for that matter has all the right in the world to voice their opinion anyway they see fit.
Amen. As a parent of three children at Mt. Greenwood I can say I have personally addressed issues such as bullying with the staff at Mt. Greenwood school and those concerns GOT ME NOWHERE! I also have seen Mrs. Reidy personally take an interest in settling a score with another parent after that parent contacted CPD headquarters over an unresolved issue. Her actions made me sick. So, remember parents: there can be consequences (for your children) if mom or dad become a squeaky wheel.
Perhaps if the administration as well as the teachers did their job and treated students with respect this blog would be a lot more boring.
Clearly, you have a few screws loose. Someone is offering to help you and all you do is make more trouble. Please get some help for yourself if not for your own sake, your child(ren).
If you did not care about your child(ren) you would not be posting on this site, to help find other parents having the same issues and how to get a peaceful resolution. You would just let your child fail and be verbally abused.
I do not think that she is aware of most situations that happen in the school, because you probably went directly to the teacher and Principal. I was not even aware of what the responsibilities of the LSC were until this year (I have never had problems like this with any other school). It is my understanding that she fills the parent/community position. Hi neighbor!
GET OUT OF THE BUBBLE! If you have 4 or 5 children enrolled in a public school, and do not work for a living, please do not criticize the working class families. Change the tone of your responses, it is seriously concerning the rest of us that you are anywhere near our children. Did it ever occur to you that you may be bringing the insanity with you?
What are your kids grades like and discipline history? You want to air things out, go ahead. No LSC here, but I do volunteer alot at the school. You obviously have a problem with a particular teacher. Instead of just taking your kids side, go in and talk to the teacher involved and your child's other teachers to get the big pciture. Yes, your little angel may not be the angel or rocket scientist you think. Stop bashing an entire school and its teachers based on your child. Grow up and take responsibility for your child.
I have 5 kids at Mount Greenwood and am very happy there. Each of my kids are very different grade wise. All have always been treated with respect, given a great education and received help when they needed it. Yes, there are good and very few not so good teachers there. I think we have had them all at one point or another with the exception of the newer teachers. When you go to work, you have co workers you may not get along with or make your job a little harder. Do you go to the entire staff and start rumours and blame the boss? Or should your confront the co worker and try to work something out, or go to the boss and voice your concern with facts and respect? You are teaching your kids the wrong way to deal with things. This is life, get over yourself and try to work out a solution without dragging the entire school system down. I agree with above, grow up.
We are overcrowded now, if you are not happy, leave.
My mailbox is in 109. You have a problem, write a letter. Give me the facts to back up what you are saying ( and I like the other post, state the fact respectfully )Sign your name. I cannot help you if you do not want a solution and just want to complain anonymously.
So this is what happens when issues of overcrowding and the lack of political support to build more schools comes to. Our teachers teach classrooms that are very full and are doing great despite the conditions CPS and our local officials have placed on them. No new schools built here where they are needed and the politicians now try to start trouble with the school by polking people to complain about issues that have more to do with their own child and not the school. If you are not happy with the school, leave.
The responses posted on here are exactly the type of communication that the students and parents receive when bringing issues directly to the school. Very hostile and angry. Imagine your child being spoken to in this type of tone. After confirming with other parents and seeing these hostile posts, I should not be listening to my "little angel" that is not a "rocket scientist"? Perhaps not an angel or a rocket scientist, but at least ignorance will not be a part of my child's future.
I offered assistance and an opportunity to be heard and your response to this is " I am being hostile"? I posted my name and not anonymously. Who is being hostile here me or you? Again, if there is a problem, write it in a letter, sign it and maybe we will find a solution.
This is exactly the type of person who feels their child is being picked on by a teacher and decides to make the whole school the target. If you have a problem with a teacher, talk to the teacher. if that does not work talk to the principal. IF you are not getting anywhere, you might want to to consider what you are saying and its validity. You just want to call the school and everyone else out because we are not treating your child the way you want. It is a school system where rules must be followed and proper behavior must be given at all times, and schoolwork must be done. From one parent to another, you are not handling this right. But if you still feel this way, I wish you luck and best wishes. I do think you will find the same expectations at other schools.
Just checked my mail box. No letter.
I am sorry,
I too have children at Mt Greenwood... I have had NOTHING but troubles there. Sure they have handicapped children in the school... all of which are BEING MOVED OUT next year. (THANK GOODNESS) Many of the teachers do not understand special need children to a point of my kids being kept from main streamin and IEP's NOT being followed.
The Principal is OVER THE TOP in the way she deals with children, and I have personally reminded her that she is no longer in the military.
If you are in the "in crowd" there your kids, and you can do no wrong... get on the wrong side of the Administrative staff and there are sure to be issues and they will keep escalating them.
I have had issues with a teacher calling my child a "LIAR" because they were afraid of the above teacher, and nothing was done for my child by the adminstrative staff. They defended the teacher, and even IF my child lied, it is not something you call a child at school.
If you want a quality public education for your children, there are 3 other schools in the area I would consider first.
Just my $.o2 for what it is worth. Go ahead and flame me but I have told it like it is...
I don't think anyone should feel bad about posting their own personal experience with Mt Greenwood School here. It helps you to realize that there are more people like yourself, having issues. We need to remember that not ALL the teachers are behaving like this. It is disturbing that the Principal, Assistant Principal and LSC member above, continue to treat the children horribly. If you identify yourself here they will go out of their way to make things worse for you and your child. I found a page from a diary online, from a 5th grader that actually hung himself in his garage because of being bullied by school staff (NOTE: it was not Mt Greenwood School). Remember this is our community, our school.
Your kid "lied" and was caught "lying" and you are upset because the teacher called him/her a "liar"????? This political correctness has to stop. Should the teacher call him/her "truth challenged" or maybe the school should fire a teacher because she held a student accountable for their actions? Get your head out of your a## lady. My son did not rob the store and how dare you say he is a robber, he is only "possession challenged". Nice parenting there.
What's next? School's should not give out homework? Maybe your kid would feel safer if they took video classes from home. This way you can coddle your kid some more with massage therapy so that your kid is not too stressed out over learning. Aroma therapy can be addded and if this is too much maybe you can do the homework for your kid. When your kid grows up, you can go to work for him so that the kid is not stressed and is not subjected to being called any names. LMAO!
I could not agree with you more. The Corporal there, oops I mean principal, is useless. If you are in with her, you're golden. If you're not, your kid is the whipping boy/girl for the rest of their time there. Little do you know she must not be satisfied with the education of her own facility because she lives in the suburbs and her kids go to one of the best school districts in the state. Don't you think she should have to live in the City? Nope Corporal doesn't have to.
If you ever have a complaints DO NOT go to the Board of Education because within seconds she knows about it and it gets swept under the rug. No Child Left Behind, what a joke. Most kids are left behind and let down by the administration there. Your best bet if you can't move, get them out of that school AND QUICK
Lol You are so right about all this!!
I had 3 kids go to this school and Short ****** was nothing but a big bully.

WOW, so now you are slandering me and I have never had any contact with you at all on any subject. Looked for a letter, and nothing! I'd be careful legal wise if you continue to slander my name and the members of the Board, who have also never had any contact with you. Again, you have a problem with a teacher, work it out. Too much discipline at the school? WOW, again. That is something to complain about? Calling a kid a liar? Not good but do you have documentation and witnesess? If you are truly interested in following through, you need to get these types of proof to proceed forward. Or are you not interested in a solution, just continued slander?
I have no kids at MTG school but have been following this thread. I have no opinion one way or the other since it does not involve me, but come on, what kind of documentation will a kid have about a teacher calling him/her a name? Have the teacher sign an affidavit swearing to the fact that "Yes, I called so and so a liar." Please, not all teachers are perfect, some do call names and belittle kids and I am shocked at some of the responses on this thread from so called adults, placing all blame on a kid when you don't know the story. You claim the mom is in denial, her kid is a liar, her kid is a trouble maker, you ask for the kids grades to be posted here, etc. If this is any indication to how the parents act regarding a child, I shudder to think how the school may act. Get a grip people, if someone is concerned enough to open up here, your responses are not helping and from an outsiders POV, you are not representing MTG school well. Has anyone thought that someone may have posted this to start controversy and is now sitting back laughing? Not saying that is the case, but a possibility. If this person really is having problems at the school and feels bullied by the parents, I hope you find strength to help your child or have the option of changing schools.
Parenting does not come with an instruction book.
I was looking to find help when I first posted here earlier this year. I was hoping to find someone that had similar situations and how to help my child. Suddenly a few "Academy Award Winning" posts of how wonderful Mt Greenwood School is starting popping up. I knew it wasn't true because the staff was way too comfortable with the professional abuse to parents and children. As I mentioned previously I asked other parents and was shocked by their situations as well. My children are not disrespectful nor are they incapable of learning.
If your child is not writing some of the homework assignments in the planner and not doing those homework assignments, is it too much to ask the teacher to call us and let us know. The Principal indicating that the parent portal is NOT MANDATORY, for teachers did not help at all. Teach them responsibility, well sure I agree with that, in the mean time "NO CHILD SHOULD BE LEFT BEHIND"!
If a child is failing a class, how about a notice letting the parents know before report card pick-up! I cannot keep a mental note of each and every homework, test, quizz and project grade for each class. So as far as I should have known, NO not really, that would be the teachers responsibility. Maybe I should have given the staff a bunch a white tickets and had them spend the Spring Break actually working at the school rather than relaxing. Or maybe all of us parents that are sick and tired of your ignorance should have lectured Mt Greenwood Principal, Assistant Principal and a few bad teachers (not all) on appropriate language to use around other peoples children.
So a teacher called a student a liar and you think that parent is "coddling" their child, well maybe a little but guess what would have happened if that student said that to the Principal, Assistant Principal or a teacher, YEP SUSPENSION! If you expect these children to learn better behavior and responsibility then LEAD BY EXAMPLE, WOW there's a concept!
People who choose to work with children are a unique class of people. A few good a few bad. If you realize that you have numerous complaints about you, please don't just sit and collect a paycheck. Do the right thing and go back to school for a career change.
If I am reading this correctly, your child did not write their assignments down in their planner as required. You are just now noticing this at the end of the year????? I do agree that you must teach a child to be responsible. This is one of those lessons. There are progress reports that go home in the middle of each marking period, why did you not notice a problem then? The planner is for parents and teachers to communicate as well. If a child is missing an assignment, my son got a red stamp, a note to me and we are all required to sign the planner each night. I get TONS of notes from my kids teachers on what is coming up and explaination of what is expected. If you do not have a computer to access the parent portal , go to the library or use your cell phone. This is truely a great tool. Computers are as necessary as having a pencil for school today. I do not know of any bad language around my kids or others so I will not comment on what I have not experienced. It does sound to me that you are an overwhelmed parent who may need some help with time management. There is a special on one of the news channels tonight on balancing homelife. I am sorry for what you are going through but please take a deep breath and know that some of this does fall on you and your child. We are partners in educating our children. You came to this blog to get some advice and possibly to vent. Use this as an opportunity to teach your kids how to deal with and move forward from a difficult situation. One possible answer would to see if next year if assignments can be added on a regular basis to the parent portal. My daughter is in 7th grade and I get tons of emails and notes on what is upcoming. It is a busy, tough year but she learned alot. Among this is time management. She is well prepared for 8th grade and beyond.
It is so awesome to "lead by example" and show your kid that anytime they and you fail to do your part and take responsibility that it SOMEONE ELSES FAULT. The school, the teacher, the pricipal......not your fault for just noticing now and not reading the planner each night. And not your childs fault for not doing their homework, writing down assignments or faling to give you notes. You gave birth after all and that is all that is required of you. Why stop there, your schools must have failed you as well growing up. Or maybe, your parents school failed to teach them, so they didn't teach you and how could you possibly be expected to teach your child responsibility and that there are consequences to your actions or lack of actions. If you are using the tone you are using here with the school, I can see how the school might want to be a little lippy to you. You get what you give. As far as a child being called a "liar". If the shoe fits....the post stated that their child did lie, so hence the child is a liar. No way to get around that one.
Please accept my apology for not clarifying my comments. This is not something that any of us noticed JUST NOW! Examples of certain situations are being put here as a means to find a solution. Although, certain wording and individual circumstances cannot be posted here as to avoid our children from being mistreated further.
If you have a child that is not writing assignments in the planner and continues to receive white slips, as a parent I contact the teacher who says that he/she is not going to post the homework on the parent portal to teach the children responsibility. OK well maybe I can BEAT my child, then try to get help from the Principal to see if maybe there is a way to get these assignments written down so I can enforce that they be completed. Nope, the Parent Portal is NOT MANDATORY.
Please excuse us while we go "coddle" our "little angel's" that are never gonna be "rocket scientist's", they have a "masssage therapy" scheduled with "aromatherapy". I hope to teach them how to "rob a bank" and let them know that I will be picketing, because I "have a few screws lose" while they go to a court hearing because their name was being "slandered" so we all "secured attorneys" to make sure that they were not called "bank robbers", but rather "challenged". LMAO too!!!!
The overcrowding of the classrooms it seems have caused the staff to be spread thin. I still do not think that any child should be left behind. The children should have a safe environment where they can learn, grow and reach their fullest potential. Some children understand all the assignments, some require help with a few assignments, while others need more help. Correct me if I am wrong but isn't it the responsibility of the staff to identify these learning styles and use the school resources as well as communicate with parents to ensure that each child is progressing to their fullest potential?
Comment: How is the school? I might
Submitted by movingtomg on Tue, 01/08/2008 - 2:54pm.How is the school? I might have to move the family to Chicago for work, and have friends in Mt. Greenwood, so we were thinking of moving there.
My wife and I think Mt. Greenwood school sounds good, but could anyone provide feedback as to its quality, its student/teacher relationships, position in the community, etc.? Or would you recommend a private school instead? My daughter is 6 and my son is 5.
Thanks.
