What's your Snackville Junction?

In the wake of its closing after 60 years, this neighborhood icon is gone forever but leaves quite a legacy. While it was a unique piece of Morgan Park history for 39 years, there are other reminders of my own childhood, signatures of Mount Greenwood, Beverly and Morgan Park. I drive past Kennedy Park and remember my first tee ball game. I remember getting toys from the vending machine at Reds (now a parking lot, I think). And of course I remember sitting at the counter at the old Snackville Junction on Western. So as it comes closer to becoming just another memory, I wonder: What's your Kennedy Park, your Reds? What's your Snackville Junction?
It's interesting that you combined Reds and Kennedy Park. When I was in lower school at Morgan Park Academy, we would always have a picnic at the end of the school year at Kennedy Park. It was always fun and it was the teachers' way of rewarding us for all our hard work. We would always look forward to going to Kennedy Park because it meant the school year was almost over. We would always walk there and on our way we would stop at Reds. I always loved the food at Reds and I was sad when they tore it down.
Does anyone remember Willy's Wayside Wagon? It was a hot dog stand located on 111th Street just east of Central Park in Mount Greenwood. I think it went out of business in the early 1990s.
I remember going there as a child and that they had the best hot dogs around. It was not in a building or anything, it was just a little stand attached to the big building on the south side of the street. All this talk of Reds and Snackville Junction made me think of Willy's Wayside Wagon.
Yes!! It was on 111th and Drake. We used to go and get the best hotdogs and fries. I think they had ice cream too. Its sad they went out of business. Pappys on 95th has dogs too I think and so does Marcos Beef next to Cardinal Fitness on 111th near Western.
I lived at 11130 South Drake, just about a quarter of a block away from Willy's Wayside Wagon. Their hot dogs were SO GOOD, that I would eat them PLAIN. No condiments,just a hot dog on a bun, a large soda and an order of fries. The owner/proprieter of that hot dog stand would actualy peal and cut up fresh potatos to make his french fries from scratch. My younger sister and I would allways stop there for a snack when the weather was nice.
Willy's was only opened from Spring through Fall, so it was a seasonal pleasure, but the opening of Willy's Wayside Wagon was a sure sign that Summer Vacation was near. In April or May, when Willy's opened, I would often stop on my way home from St. Christina's school for a hot dog, fries and a drink. They also had great hamburgers, too.
My younger sister was fond of the Tamales he use to serve. It truely is tragic that it went out of business.

Submitted by Pammcl on Sun, 05/27/2007 - 9:48pm.My son also played T-ball at Kennedy Park and later Little League in Merrionette Park. Very fond memories of watching him at both places. My youngest son enjoyed going to his brother's games solely for the concession stand and playing with the younger siblings of the other players.
I don't mean to speak for either of them, but I know they both enjoyed the Happy Meals from McDonalds, especially when the giveaway had anything to do with Star Wars.
