Submitted by Staff on Fri, 09/07/2007 - 6:40pm.
The Ridge Historical Society, 10621 S. Seeley Ave., will hold a grand opening event for its new exhibit on the Better Homes in America (BHinA) campaign on Sunday, September 30, 2007, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Refreshments will be served and everyone is welcome to attend. There is no charge for this event. The exhibit will run for several months and additional upcoming programs on this topic will be announced.
Better Homes in America, Inc. (BHinA), was a not-for-profit educational campaign begun in 1922 by The Delineator, a mass-circulation magazine for women put out by the Butterick Pattern Company. Herbert Hoover, then U.S. Secretary of Commerce, served as the campaign's president for 12 years. The goal of the campaign was to make accessible to all people living in America the knowledge of high standards of home building, furnishing and home life.
Demonstration houses were set up, and educational programs held, all over the country. Publications on a variety of topics were made available. In Chicago, a local chapter of the Better Homes in America organization was established by 1923 and within two years the Chicago Council was able to erect a demons tration house is suburban Park Ridge. Through an interesting turn of events, the Beverly Hills/Morgan Park area became involved in this movement in 1927.
The Ridge Historical Society is open to the public on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 773-881-1675 during office hours, Monday through Friday, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. RHS is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the research and preservation of the history of the Beverly Hills/Morgan Park community.
