The event is scheduled for 7 p.m. Sept. 19 at the Shannon Center on SXU's campus, 3700 W. 103rd St.
Prior to Powell’s lecture, titled “Diplomacy: Persuasion, Trust & Values,” SXU President Judith A. Dwyer, Ph.D., will present him with a Doctor of Public Service, honoris causa, in recognition of his long and distinguished career of public service.
Earlier in the day, Powell is scheduled to conduct a special classroom discussion with Saint Xavier students.
Powell became the 65th Secretary of State January 20, 2001, serving under President George W. Bush. He previously served as a key aide to the secretary of defense and as national security advisor to President Ronald Reagan.
He also served 35 years in the U.S. Army, rising to the rank of four-star general and serving as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1989 to 1993. During that time he oversaw 28 crises, including the Panama intervention of 1989 and Operation Desert Storm in the 1991 Persian Gulf War.
