Dining in, Mt. Greenwood style
Submitted by Michael Fielding on Wed, 09/23/2009 - 12:22pm.
Twelve local food vendors and 70 crafters will converge on the parking lot of the Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences, 3807 W. 111th St., Sunday for the first annual Taste of Mount Greenwood.
The free event, scheduled from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., also will feature a car show, jungle gym and demonstrations by the Palos Remote Control Airplane Club – not to mention a DJ and concert by local band The Highlife Boys.
It’s the latest incarnation of the neighborhood’s annual celebrations that stretch back more than a decade, beginning with the Party in the Park, which was first held at Mount Greenwood Park in 1997 to commemorate the neighborhood's 90th anniversary.
It would become an annual event leading up to the 100th anniversary party in September 2007. The annual celebration funded several neighborhood beautification projects, including a commemorative rock in the garden in front of the Mount Greenwood Park fieldhouse and decorations for the outdoor community Christmas tree near the ice rink.
“The year after the 100th, people were asking us if we were going to continue with the event,” explained Darlene Myers, executive director of the Mount Greenwood Chamber of Commerce, which has spearheaded the event. But that was the same year that the Mount Greenwood Playlot opened, so the chamber decided to take a back seat with its celebration. “We wanted them to have all the glory, so we put the Party in the Park on the back burner.”
“A lot of businesses are suffering, so this way neighbors can come out after church and sample some of the local restaurants,” Myers said of the decision to highlight Mount Greenwood’s food vendors and restaurants.
Other highlights include a farm stand, free hay rides and Irish dancers. Children also may visit the animals at the ag school.
Food vendors scheduled to participate are:
115 Bourbon Street, Burrito Station, Calvary Lutheran, Corrigan’s, Fat Tommy’s, Frank’s Chicago Shrimp House, JR Boz’s, Richie’s, Rosati’s, Sweet Escapes, Tata’s Pizza and Wiseguys Pizza.
