Beverly Arts Center Seeks Books Clubs to Participate in NEA Big Read Submitted by Staff on Thu, 09/06/2007 - 2:17pm.

The Beverly Arts Center (BAC), invites area book clubs to participate in the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Big Read program this fall by reading Ray Bradbury?s ?Fahrenheit 451.? The BAC, a regional facility providing fine arts programming and education to south and southwest Chicago and suburban communities, will host art activities, book discussions, a film showing, and other events from Sept. 20 through Nov. 12.

Book clubs are invited to read ?Fahrenheit 451? and join in the discussions and events planned at the BAC. High schools are also encouraged to participate in the Big Read; teacher guides and other materials are available through the BAC.

The Big Read is an NEA initiative designed to restore reading to the center of American culture. The NEA presents the Big Read in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and in cooperation with Arts Midwest. The Big Read brings together partners across the country to encourage reading for pleasure and enlightenment.

Big Read events to be held at the Beverly Arts Center, 2407 W. 111th St. (111th and south Western Avenue), Chicago, include:

* Book club meetings, ?Fahrenheit 451? Part I (Oct. 4), Part II (Oct. 11) and Part III (Oct. 18), 7 to 8:30 p.m.
* Big Read Kick-Off, Sunday, Oct. 7, 3 to 5 p.m. Free. Family-friendly event includes readings from ?Fahrenheit 451? and interactive arts activities.
* Chicago Tribune columnist Rick Kogan leads ?Fahrenheit 451? book discussion, Thurs., Oct. 25, 7 p.m. Free.
* Screening of ?Fahrenheit 451? (1966, directed by Francois Truffaut, starring Julie Christie and Oskar Werner), followed by discussion lead by Ray Bradbury expert and biographer Sam Weller, Thurs., Nov. 1, 7 p.m., general public. The Beverly Arts Center will also curate, collect and research a traveling exhibit, The Art of Censorship, featuring prints of censored art. The exhibit opens Sept. 20 at the BAC, and will be up for one week each at the Beverly (2121 W. 95th St.), Mount Greenwood (11010 S. Kedzie) and Walker (11071 S. Hoyne) branches of the Chicago Public Library; Alsip/Merrionette Park Public Library (11960 S. Pulaski, Alsip), Blue Island Public Library (2433 York St., Blue Island) and Evergreen Park Public Library, (9400 S. Troy, Evergreen Park).

The south/southwest communities partnering with the BAC on this program are among nearly 200 communities nationwide participating in the Big Read in 2007.
